Su MS Press Blog è stata annunciata la pubblicazione del nuovo libro Microsoft SQL Server 2012 High-Performance T-SQL Using Window Functions; l'autore non ha bisogno di presentazioni, è il grande Itzik Ben-Gan.

Il testo è dedicato alle funzioni di windowing che si applicano tipicamente al sotto-insieme di dati (finestra) determinato dalla clausola OVER, introdotta con SQL Server 2005 e ampiamente estesa in SQL Server 2012. Il linguaggio T-SQL non è solo SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE e MERGE; chi ha la possibilità di studiarlo si accorge ben presto di quanto sia ricco di statement set-based e di quanto sia importante avere un linguaggio dichiarativo per scrivere query.

We spend much of our working life helping solve SQL Server-related performance problems, hands-on, during consulting, or on online forums. We've seen a few weird-and-wonderful issues but, mainly, it’s the same problems and misconceptions time-and-again. This is our attempt to describe, diagnose, and solve the most common problems with SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2.

First, we explain a basic approach to troubleshooting, the essential tools, and how rare it is that a problem can be diagnosed by looking at a single data point. The art of troubleshooting SQL Server is the art of first gathering various pieces of information and then assembling the "puzzle" to reveal a complete picture of what is going on inside a server, and so the root of the problem. Next, we explore the areas in which problems arise with alarming regularity:

High Disk I/O – RAID misconfiguration, inadequate I/O throughput, poor workload distribution, SAN issues, disk partition misalignment and more
High CPU usage – insufficient memory, poorly written queries, inadequate indexing, inappropriate configuration option settings, and so on
Memory mismanagement – the advent of 64-bit SQL Server removes the memory allocation "shackles" placed on its 32-bit predecessors, but issues arising from incorrect memory configuration are still common
Missing indexes – arguably the number one cause of wasteful resource usage in SQL Server
Blocking – caused mainly by poorly designed databases that lack proper keys and indexing, and applications that apply needlessly restrictive transaction isolation levels
Deadlocking – covering the Bookmark Lookup deadlock, the Serializable Range Scan deadlock, the Cascading Constraint deadlock and more
Full transaction logs – lack of log backups, hefty index maintenance operations, long running transaction, problems with replication and mirroring environments, and more.
Accidentally-lost data – "oops, wrong database!" Let's hope you've got backups.

In each case, the book describes the most common problems, why they occur, and how they can be diagnosed using tools such as the Performance Monitor, Dynamic Management Views, server-side tracing, and more. Finally, it provides practical solutions for removing root causes, rather than "papering over the cracks".

The steps and techniques described are ones we use day-to-day to troubleshoot real SQL Server performance problems. With them, we hope you can solve performance problems quickly and accurately, and tame your unruly SQL Servers.

L'ottimizzatore delle query è uno dei componenti più complessi che possiamo trovare all'interno del motore relazionale di un database server (RDBMS). In SQL Server, il componente che si occupa dell’ottimizzazione delle query è il Query Optimizer.

Il T-SQL è un linguaggio dichiarativo (fortunatamente!), lo sviluppatore dichiara cosa vuole ottenere, il come ottenerlo è compito del Query Optimizer, che genera e valuta molteplici piani di esecuzione con l'obiettivo di sceglierne uno (il più ottimale) in funzione del cost-based plan e della velocità di esecuzione. Query Optimizer trasforma una query T-SQL in un piano di esecuzione.

Preface

Writing good TSQL code is not an easy task. Then you submit the code to the query optimizer and strange things happen. The one good view you have into what the optimizer decided to do is provided by the execution plans. Understanding execution plans is a lot of work. Trust me on that. What you need to really understand your queries is as much knowledge as you can get. That's where this excellent collection of articles on some of the more common execution plan operators comes in.

Fabiano Amorim has taken the time to reallv drill into the behavior of a small set of execution plan operators in an effort to explain the optimizer's behavior. He's explored why things happen, how you can change them, positively or negatively, and he's done it all in an approachable style. You want information and knowledge in order to achieve understanding.

When I wrote my book on execution plans, 1 really did try to focus on the plan as a whole So while I spent time talking about individual operators, what they did, and why they did it, 1 was frequently not as interested in discussing everything that an individual operator might do once I had established their role in a given plan. Having someone like Fabiano come along and go the opposite route, sort of ignoring the whole plan in an effort to spend time exploring the operator, acts to fill in gaps. Where I tried to teach how to read an execution plan, Fabiano is trying to teach what a given operator does. It's all worth- while and it all accumulates to give you more knowledge.
